KATE MARSH - Detention
LIFE IS STRANGE || Kate Marsh x Reader
No work ever was ever completed in Mr Stephenson's history class, it was just the right amount of assholes, elites, stoners and loners to create the least productive educational environment. It could be easily mistaken for a zoo, the commotion and clear predator and prey system and the rowdy ape-like behaviour demonstrated by the likes of Zach and Logan.
You're currently on the topic of the U2 Crisis, well you were a couple of weeks ago so you're not too sure if you'd moved on. The topic throughout the students today was the 'Stella going to prison' rumour, which you knew was complete bullshit but it was fun to listen in on.
You and Logan had been throwing a ball back and forth since the beginning of the lesson, from the front seats that face inwards all the way over to the back, where you sat. Next to Kate Marsh, your girlfriend of almost 10 months, nobody knew but the two of you and you both liked it that way.
"Stella's a free woman," Taylor yells as the dark-haired girl walks in and quickly takes her seat, "What were you in for?" The blond questions slyly, Victoria and Courtney peering over each shoulder.
"I've been ill." She responds briefly which immediately erupts yelps and screeches from the girls in a childish manner. Victoria unleashes her wrath on the poor girl, picking and poking at everything she says and does.
You glanced at Kate, her face a mask of uncomfortable interest as she listened to the escalating barrage of questions thrown at Stella. You recognise her discomfort, feeling sorry for both of the girls.
So on a whim, you receive the ball, thrown over from Logan and quickly scan the room.
"Oi Vic!" You shout across the room through the muffled conversation before lobbing the ball straight at her head. You prayed your aim was good or else it'd be a lifetime of embarrassment, which in the end paid off.
The ball, a well-worn tennis ball, whizzed through the air, a silent missile aimed at Victoria's unsuspecting head. A collective gasp rippled through the classroom as it met its target with a satisfying thud. Victoria, momentarily stunned, blinked in disbelief before her face contorted into a mask of fury, her piercing eyes locking onto yours.
But before she could make you pay hell, another thud was heard across the room, a bit further this time, with a more croaky welp.
The rest of the class, including Victoria, seemed to hold their breath, waiting for the inevitable explosion. But you, encouraged by the sudden silence, held both of their gazes, your heart pounding in your chest, with a shocked open-moth smile plastered on your face.
A small giggle interrupts the devastating silence, and to everybody's surprise, it was Kate Marsh's.
Victoria felt as though the girl had punched her ego in the gut, "Kate Marsh!" She hisses, bitter and cruel.
"Who did this?" The short man yelled, his fists balled and face red, "Kate, this is your doing?"
She shook her head vigorously, her voice a small whisper, "I didn't... I didn't do anything." Her denial rang hollow despite her honesty, especially with the knowing look she cast in your direction. Victoria, her face radiating fury, swung around, her gaze sweeping across the room, landing on Logan, who was now carefully chewing on his pen, a mischievous glint in his eye. He, too, denied any involvement, albeit with less conviction, his face betraying any hint of amusement.
You decided before you get in trouble, you may as well make it somewhat amusing, "Victoria did it!"
The tall girl's head snapped around quicker than I could finish saying her name, "No I didn't this is bullshit! She did it."
"I second that," Courtney adds, desperate to get Victoria on her good side.
You show a faux concern, "Are you sure you didn't knock yourself a bit hard, Vic?" With a tilt of your head, patting your head.
"It was you!" She insists.
The rest of the class clearly want in on the drama and all begin blaming each other, a whirlwind of denials and accusations swirling like a dust devil in the confined space. You watched with feigned innocence, enjoying the chaos you'd ignited. Logan, with his signature smirk, was the first to break, his eyes twinkling with mischief as he pointed a finger at Courtney, "It was you, Courtney! I saw you throw the ball!"
Courtney, caught off guard, sputtered, "What? No! I was just looking at my phone!" Her denial was weak, her flustered demeanour betraying her.
"Actually, I take it back. It was actually Juliet." You laugh, holding your stomach, while an enraged Victoria yells at you, unbothered whether you're actually listening. A stunned Juliet's head pricked up at the sound of her name.
"What? How am I involved in this-"
As the teacher, still fuming, struggled to regain control of the classroom, a wave of whispers broke out, speculating about the identity of the culprit. "ENOUGH!" The short man screamed, you were sure for a second you could see steam piping out of his ears.
He strikes a pointing finger in your direction, "You! Kate! Hour after school with me!"
Immediately a pang of guilt hits you like a clapper to morning bells, you slowly turn your head to a clearly distressed Kate, attempting an apologetic tight smile. Her eyes, wide and apprehensive, darted nervously between the irate teacher and the rest of the class, desperately seeking solace in the familiar faces that now seemed to hold a hint of judgment.
"I am so sor-" You slowly begin to whisper before being cut off.
"Get out of my sight!" Stephenson roared, his face flushed, veins pulsing on his forehead.
Kate was known throughout Blackwell for her spotless behaviour and high GPA, and she had told you before how important it was not only to her parents but also to herself, so you'd fucked up big time.
At this point you were halfway down the corridor, Kate tightly holding her books to her chest as you attempted to keep up with her swift pace, trying your hardest to apologise and comfort the girl. But she ignored you and carried on her walk to the dorms, you shortly following behind.
"Kate! It's fine, you know, I know, we all know I'm to blame, I can go tell him if you want." You try but she still doesn't even look your way. Now she'd slammed her door on you. You exhale deeply and rub your hand over your temples with closed eyes.
You: I know you probably don't want to hear from me, but I am really sorry. Like mega sorry.
You: Working on something at the moment, hope I can make it up to you.
You: Love you
You put down your phone and lay flat on your bed, workshopping anything that'd either get Kate out of detention or at least make her forget about it.
You could blackmail Stephenson, though you probably wouldn't get away with it.
You could tell Kate that it was cancelled. She wouldn't believe it mad at you or not.
Your time had run out and your free period was over, Kate's too. You knocked on her door again, but this time you didn't wait for a response. "Kate, it's me," you said. "I know you're mad, and I get it, but I just wanted to ask if you wanted to walk with me?."
There was a brief pause before Kate responded and opened her door with shy eyes, "Okay," she said.
It was a slow walk and a silent one at that. Unusually uncomfy. And there he was, Stephenson, short and wide, sporting his small glasses with crossed arms.
"Sir, may I go to the toilet please?" A small voice questioned from your side, and with a nod of the teacher's head, Kate had left, leaving you one-to-one with the man and with a bit of time.
This was your chance. Trying to sound casual, you cleared your throat and said, "Mr. Stephenson, about earlier... I know I'm not the easiest student, but the incident earlier was completely my fault. Victoria was picking at Stella, Kate's friend - I didn't like it."
You watched Stephenson carefully, waiting for his reaction. He was a tough nut to crack, especially after the lesson prior, his expression impassive, but you sensed a flicker of something behind his eyes. "I understand you're trying to maintain order," you continued, "but on Kate's behalf, detention seems a bit harsh. Could we maybe… discuss other options? I can help out anywhere." You knew it was a long shot, but you had to try.
The short man sighed, adjusting his glasses, "Fine."
You could've done cartwheels of happiness on the spot but maintained your joy, "Grea-"
"I expect you for an hour after school this week, you'll be sorting out the History department cupboard," It didn't sound too bad when he said it, but after thinking for a moment, you realise that it must've been at least 12 years since somebody had dared to step into that pit.
As your girlfriend was approaching, Mr Stephenson dismissed you, "I'll let you off tonight, now go."
Kate's face was painted with confusion as you walked her way, "What're you doing?"
You take her hand with a smile, "No detention for you, thanks to yours dearly. Want to go out for tea?" You ask hopefully.
You saw a flicker of understanding dawn in her eyes, and a light blush crept up her cheeks. "You mean, because you...?" she began, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Because I pleaded your case?" You finished for her, a mischievous glint in your eye. "He was pretty grumpy, but I managed to convince him you were completely innocent." You chuckled, watching her reaction with amusement.
"You really did that for me?" She asked, her voice filled with a mixture of disbelief and gratitude.
"Of course," you replied, squeezing her hand. "You're worth it." The relief on her face was palpable, as was the gratitude in her eyes.
"Maybe not worth what I've got to do now, but-"
"Tea sounds perfect, my love." She agrees as you walk out of an empty Blackwell, leaning in and planting a soft kiss on your cheek.

MK1 x Winter Soldier Reader Intros
Me not writing only about the Lin Kuei Bros? Who would've thought. Idk why I thought of this but here we are. For those not into Marvel the simplest way to explain TWS is he was in the Army in the 50s then he was injected with the super soldier serum and forced to become an assassin with over two dozen assassinations in the last 50 years. You're not a white guy named James “Bucky” Barnes, you just hold the title. Also you got a metal arm, it’ll make sense later-
Kung Lao: You’re a Winter Soldier?
Y/N: I am The Winter Soldier
Kung Lao: Ugh, more training?
Y/N: Do you expect to get better through sheer luck?
Kung Lao: I take it Liu Kang doesn’t allow assassins to be Earthrealm’s champion?
Y/N: Assassins and failures, such as yourself
Kung Lao: How do I become a Winter Soldier?
Y/N: You don’t
Raiden: It is an honor to be trained by you
Y/N: As is to train Earthrealm’s champion
Raiden: I can’t imagine going through what you have
Y/N: Good. You’ll save yourself nightmares
Y/N: Sometimes I worry I’m not a good person
Raiden: You are a good person through and through
Y/N: I wish I had lightning powers
Raiden: I wish I had your metal arm
(These rabid dogs behind him-)
Liu Kang: I hoped your life would be better this time
Y/N: Why hope when you had the power to change it and didn’t?
Y/N: You let my life go down this path?
Liu Kang: I cannot control everything
Y/N: You let me be a part of Earthrealm’s defenses, why? Pity?
Liu Kang: Because you are a capable warrior who deserves more in life
Liu Kang: Do you doubt my care for you?
Y/N: You expect me to still believe our friendship is real?
Y/N: I am not playing an assassin in your movie
Johnny: Aw, but you have tons of experience
Johnny: How much for the arm?
Y/N: Not for sale
(That debt kicking his ass)
Johnny: Your life could make an amazing movie
Y/N: You’ll become a real victim if I see it
Johnny: Over two dozen assassinations but a date with me would ruin you?
Y/N: If I had to pick between being a mindless assassin and dating you, I’d put my mask back on
Kenshi: Wanna trade predicaments?
Y/N: A blindfold looks much better on you
Kenshi: Have you ever fought a blind swordsman?
Y/N: Not sure it’d be fair to count it as a fight
Y/N: I too understand the need for a new life
Kenshi: Perhaps that is why we are such good friends
Kenshi: Planning on giving me a hand?
Y/N: I don’t think you’d see it coming
Y/N: And they call me The Winter Soldier
Bi-Han: Jokes will not help you win this fight
Bi-Han: You have not a shred of hope against the Lin Kuei’s Grandmaster
Y/N: Your ego is what’ll knock you down in the end
Bi-Han: You won’t have the element of surprise with me
Y/N: Oh Bi-Han, I’ll be the last thing you see before you die
Bi-Han: You alone won’t take the Lin Kuei down
Y/N: I’ve taken a whole country down in one night. Excuse me for not being scared
Kuai Liang: I am glad to have your support
Y/N: You always will
Y/N: Are you willing to kill Bi-Han if he does not back down?
Kuai Liang: I am not sure
Y/N: Liu Kang could’ve made all our lives better and chose not to
Kuai Liang: You have to believe in his judgment
Kuai Liang: Liu Kang is not your enemy
Y/N: He is certainly not our friend
Y/N: I’ve heard you’re a great fighter
Tomas: I’ve heard the same about you
Tomas: You look great for 106 years old
Y/N: God, you gotta stop hanging around Johnny
Tomas: Why still defend Earthrealm if you’re so angry?
Y/N: The same reason you do; the need to protect is bigger than anger
Tomas: Why’d I have to hit Madam Bo and not you?
Y/N: I’m left/right handed and that’s the metal one soooo…
"I'm gonna write angst soon" *proceeds to write dumb Marvel x Mortal Kombat shit* I could've looked for gifs when they clash but my tumblr is actually so glitchy, if I did that I'd Kate Marsh. Also disclaimer. I should be writing Liar pt 3 and I have some of it written but I'm fr not having fun with it. For whatever reason it's just not making me happy like Mortal Kombat is. And as a bitch who has bad depression and that shit gets alarmingly bad during this time of year, uhhh I don't wanna do something that's not making me happy. I'm not tryna go to another hospital so Imma put off writing it until I'm having fun. Who knows, maybe that'll be next week. But yeah, that's for the Shadow and Bone fans here. Also also a fanfic, oneshot, drabble, whatever the fuck about being with Liu Kang (or being friends) and thinking your relationship is fake because as your creator he must've forced it to happen (he didn't but ya know). Am I cooking 'cause I feel like I am.

skit idea: Kate Marsh becomes the leader and founding member of the Victoria Chase Protection Squad (Vic is confused but secretly LOVES it)
Kate - [with a sign for the VAG (Aka Victoria Alliance Guild) ] We should support Victoria because she’s trying REALLY hard
[They all turn to Victoria , who is looking at her half drunk water bottle before giving it to another student]
Kate - There was a day she would have thrown it at their head and called them a peasant
[Taylor and Courtney cheer]
Max - Kate, don’t make the henchman a trio
Kate - The correct word is “follower”. I made a fan club to support her self improvement
Max - Who is she now ? God ?!
Kate - Of course not Max, I can’t kiss god
[Victoria walks up to her and gives hers whole slice of her favorite cake]
Victoria - You need to eat more. You’re so stupid sometimes , I told you to take care of yourself
Kate - Sorry …
Victoria - [grabs her by the wrist] Come along , I’m going to watch you eat it and then we can discuss what’s going on in your life
Kate - But I don’t want to talk about myself
Victoria - And that’s a problem ! Don’t make me start a fan club for you
Max - … I’d join

The Portrayal of Religious Trauma and Spiritual Abuse: Kate Marsh's Story
Let's dive into the heavy topic of religious trauma and spiritual abuse through the lens of Kate Marsh's disturbing experiences in Life is Strange. Fair warning - this gets pretty dark and covers sensitive subject matter around mental health, abuse, and religion. But it's an important conversation to have.
I'll try to break it down in sections, Kate was a kind, religious student at Blackwell Academy who was viciously bullied and slut-shamed after a video of her making out with several guys at a party surfaced online. The emotional fallout was devastating for the vulnerable, sheltered Kate who turned to her faith for refuge.
But the devout church group she was a part of largely turned their backs on her at her most desperate time of need. Rather than supporting and protecting one of their own who was victimized, many in the community embraced a cruel "she had it coming" mentality filled with harsh judgments and rejection.(Mainly her mother and Aunt) It's a sickening injustice that sadly rings true to the experiences of religious trauma survivors.
Religious trauma is the psychological damage caused by severely negative religious experiences, often involving emotional manipulation, toxic teachings, and authoritarian abuse from a faith community. Spiritual abuse takes it a step further by leveraging the faith beliefs against the person through tactics like shunning, shaming, blaming, and enforced deprivation.
And that's exactly what seemed to happen to Kate. When she needed her church the most, they failed her miserably. She was essentially spiritually abandoned and abused at her most vulnerable point by the one place that should have been her ultimate safe haven. No wonder she became depressed and suicidal.
Toxic Purity Culture Playing a Role
A major factor that enabled Kate's spiritual abuse was the deeply engrained "purity culture" mentality that sadly permeates many conservative religious circles. Placing extreme, repressive emphasis on sexual purity before marriage for women while glorifying female submissiveness, modesty, and chastity as moral virtues.
The blaming and shaming of Kate seemed directly tied to this subculture that essentially slut-shames any woman who doesn't rigidly conform to those outdated, sexist standards of feminine purity. Rather than showing compassion to a young victim of exploitation, they turned on her with unbridled judgment and alienation for the perceived sexual "sin." It's dehumanizing victim-blaming crap that can utterly demolish someone's mental health and self-worth.
Frankly, the community's reaction reeked of misogyny masked by feigning moral superiority over Kate's sexuality. An undercurrent of the age-old condemning "she was asking for it" dismissal of sexual assault that has enabled abuse against women for centuries.
Lack of Support Exacerbating Mental Health Struggles
With her church circle reinforcing the vicious bullying through their ostracization and shaming, it robbed Kate of what could have been a core support system to help her through the trauma. Having that foundation ripped out from under her only exacerbated her deteriorating mental health and feelings of existential despair.
In healthy faith communities, spiritual support is meant to be a therapeutic anchor helping guide people through severe crises with acceptance, compassion, and affirmation of self-worth. When that lifeline is cruelly replaced with damnation, dejection, and reinforced self-loathing, it can trigger or worsen clinical depression, PTSD, anxiety, and suicidal ideation.
The spiritual abuse Kate endured represented a profound emotional betrayal compounding her already staggering psychological distress. With the roots of her identity and personal value system embedded in those religious bonds, having that ripped away left her feeling profoundly insignificant, unworthy, and alone.
Clearly, her community failed her abysmally in her hour of greatest need. The very sanctuary meant to provide unconditional acceptance, safe harbor, and trauma-informed care through a spiritual framework kicked her to the curb instead based on a deeply flawed fundamentalist sexual ethos.
Unhealed Trauma Perpetuating a Vicious Cycle
The heavy implication seemed to be that Kate's virgin/whore complex wasn't properly processed or healed from her traumatic experiences. Which is understandable given how spiritually adrift she was abandoned by the one faith support system she invested everything in.
Without a safe outlet to properly unpack the acute shame, rejection-sensitivity, objectification, existential brokenness and myriad other complex emotions involved in her ordeal, it's no surprise she sank deeper into despondency and self-harm reinforcing patterns.
With virtually no healthy framework to recontextualize what happened and rebuild her self-worth, she remained stuck in a purgatory of unhealed trauma and spiritual abuse aftershocks slowly tearing her apart.
That's what makes the cycle of religious trauma so insidious and damaging. The very sociological underpinnings that are meant to affirm someone's humanity within a belief system get hijacked as weapons to degrade and dehumanize them. It fundamentally distorts their entire sense of identity, purpose, and cosmic belonging.
Breaking the Cycle through Awareness and Support
Which is why greater mainstream awareness around religious trauma and its mental health impacts is so crucial, especially for practices that enable spiritual abuse and toxic fundamentalism. The more we can shine a light on these cycles, the easier it becomes to recognize the warning signs and intervene before vulnerable people get systematically stripped of their dignity.
Ultimately, it's about providing a compassionate environment that deconstructs shame, learns from past mistakes, and rebuilds supportive networks for those in crisis based on healthy spirituality and belonging.
Kate's isolation was one of the most heartbreaking parts of her story. If she'd had access to affirming support systems equipped to empathize with her pain and guide her through it based on universally human values like grace, acceptance and resilience, perhaps the outcome could have been different.
Because at the end of the day, faith is meant to provide sanctuary and healing from suffering - not be another source of torment. Kate deserved so much better than to be discarded and shamed by the very community that should have fiercely protected her.
Hopefully through greater empathy and open discussions on religious trauma, spiritual abuse and their horrific toll, we can learn how to cultivate spiritual environments that truly embody the unconditional love they preach - especially for those who need it most.
#kate marsh#life is strange#cw sui ideation#cw abuse#analysis post#this is definitely one of the more underrated aspects

For the LIS 2 ask game: 2, 6, 8, 26, 27
2. favorite non-brother character
Karen--not in the "i want to hang out with her" favorite but the "I want to study her for days on end because she is so very Fascinating" favorite. ditches her sons for a decade and explains herself with the most bizarre teenage-leftist word salad i've ever seen. brings condoms on a trip to rescue said sons from a cult. is mia for esteban's death, multiple explosions, and Sean's eye, but shows up based on a letter from some weirdo she's never met. reenacts her and Esteban's fight-and-smoke-together ritual with Sean like he's a ken doll of his dead dad. sets a church on fire for her sons and protects them after they commit a murder. turns herself in to the cops because she loves her kids and doesn't want to spend too much time with them. refers to having children as "breeding" in that one letter to her parents. i need to put her under a microscope so bad.
6. favorite scene
torn between dancing on the bed at the beginning (FUCKING feelings) and the blood brothers border massacre (FUCKING chills). the dance scene is so sweet and also an amazing parallel to the canon romance pairing from lis1, which I love, and blood brothers is just--epic. watching Daniel reach his full potential like that, how far he'll go to protect his brother, is the most beautiful and spectacular thing in the world.
8. favorite choice
definitely the Lisbeth one. it's such an amazing culmination to an already brilliant and terrifying ep. i'm a slut for weird parallels and fucked-up christian imagery and it's just so...so fucking good, my god (literally).
the way Daniel just raises her into the air like he did the cross in the earlier scene? the way that was just a performance, but things are different now and Daniel isn't a little wolf cub doing tricks, he remembers he has teeth? Sean's cutting Daniel's metaphorical puppet strings and Daniel hoisting Lisbeth up on telekinetic ones? the callback to the fucking puma from ep 2? the fact "you raise me up" is literally a christian song i remember singing as a kid and this is the harsh reality of being actually raised high by your god? the way the heavenly space around them has been transformed into hell, all pretensions at eden stripped away? the jarring difference between the last ep where Sean is permanently marked by Daniel losing control and now he knows exactly what he's doing and the difference is so fucking real?
the way it's the most ruthless choice in the game, maybe even in the franchise, this vengeance for nothing more than vengeance's sake, and it turns out that's a perfectly good reason? Sean facing Lisbeth at Daniel's side where she had been only a few minutes ago? Daniel saying she tried to use me like he's heartbroken and she hurt you with the fury of a thousand suns? the wiki describing Lisbeth as being hung from a "telekinetic noose" and it calls back to Sean being "Judge Diaz" to Daniel's executioner, to Judas Iscariot hanging himself, to Daniel's dream suicide at the beginning of the ep, to hell, even Kate Marsh's suicide in lis1?
the cain vs abel vibes of this whole ep, brother and brother unsure who is the righteous and who is the damned, sean's forehead literally being blooded like a mark of cain, only to turn together on the force that tried to split them up like that? the way Lisbeth has spent the whole episode forcing godhood upon Daniel until she suddenly realizes that gods have the capacity for judgement? Lisbeth trying to adopt Daniel and Karen coming back for him, but Sean is the one who gets to influence what Daniel ultimately does, the secondary access to godlike power that he's earned through all his hard work and self-sacrifice, his love and care and determination to fix his mistakes, where the others have only offered abuse and neglect?
the alternative where Sean tells Nicholas shoot me in the face and live with it before he blows Lisbeth away and lives with it just fine? Karen seeing what her children are truly capable of in every sense of the word, having to live with what they became to survive when she wasn't there for them? Sean spending the whole episode being helpless and heartbroken and brutalized in so many ways, only to very suddenly be gifted more power than he's ever had in his life, this complete control over the life and death over another human being? how fucking satisfying it is for him to either kill his little brother's abuser or let Daniel do it himself?
just. fucking. fucking HELL (literally). this episode.
26. one headcanon?
i kind of like the idea of the Diaz family having a generational reputation in Puerto Lobos for being a little bit Weird--like nothing on Daniel's scale, but there are rumors, whispers, stories of miracles and ghosts and strange happenings on their land, of secret truths older than colonization. not everybody can decide if it's of god or the devil, but when the parents die and young Esteban leaves, the whole town feels like it's lost something more than just a mechanic. nobody really has the guts to go onto the property until two young brothers set up shop there, and the other citizens can't help thinking something important has settled back into place.
27. one au?
detroit become human! inspired by this art and a playthrough i've been watching a friend do, lol. would love Esteban as an android mechanic taking in two lost little androids from a discontinued child line and giving them a home and a last name, only for them to get in trouble when they're caught "deviating" (gaining sentience) and he gets murdered defending them from the police, so they have to go on the run...

Wardmarsh for the ship ask game
Dana Ward x Kate Marsh
Hell yeah! I even wrote a wardmarsh once upon a time. I think it's very cute~
Cheerleader x church girl is good, and they're both pretty sweet characters. Plus I feel like Dana kiiiinda has that mom-friend energy to be protective of Kate and making her look after herself, but she also clearly has needs that Kate could actually be respectful of?
Alternately, the pregnancy thing could make for a lot of really juicy drama between them? Depending on how you play it?

MAGICAL NEWS
[Buckingsim Palace 1:52 PM WST]
Queen Katherine: So, what I've learned is that the stones grant spellcasters the Power of Manipulation, which could make them as powerful as one of the three Sages, who are the three most powerful spellcasters that keep the magical realm in balance.
Zarah, Queen Dowager: (silence)
Queen Katherine: With the Power of Manipulation a spellcaster gains the ability to manipulate magical power in various ways.
Zarah, Queen Dowager: How?
Queen Katherine: A spellcaster would not only have the power to grant powers but strip someone of their powers too. In the letter, Isabella made it clear we were to protect the stones but...
Zarah, Queen Dowager: What are you going to do about Kamill? She is not only a Windsor by blood but a very powerful spellcaster.
Queen Katherine: I have the advantage and an idea.
Queen Katherine: The Grand Duchess thinks there's only one stone, the Amulet of Amethyst. I will use that as leverage.
Zarah, Queen Dowager: (feisty) You're playing with fire, darling! What on earth would you need to leverage the Amulet for? She has nothing we need, and with the stones the royal family's net worth increased by §50 million simoleons! Don't be greedy like your father. What more is there?
Queen Katherine: (silence)
Zarah, Queen Dowager: (gasps) Kate! You wouldn't? You?
Queen Katherine: ...the children. It would be the only way to protect them, and to protect the stones.
Zarah, Queen Dowager: Would you like my advice?
Queen Katherine: Always.
Zarah, Queen Dowager: There was a time, when I was a child, when spell casting was forbidden. Sims were afraid of what they didn't know. Times have changed, darling. It's time our family does too! We must look to the future. Protect the monarchy.
Queen Katherine: (silence)
Zarah, Queen Dowager: Where is the portrait?
- - - - - A FEW MINUTES LATER - - - - -
Zarah, Queen Dowager: She was absolutely breathtaking!
Queen Katherine: She was!
(cell phone rings)
Queen Katherine: This is Lara. I should answer to make sure she's okay. Excuse me, granny.
Queen Katherine: (happy) Sissy, this is the best news ever! Come over so we can celebrate! I'll have the kitchen make your favorites!
Princess Grace: My great-great-great-great grandmother?
Zarah, Queen Dowager: Yes!
Princess Grace: She was the first Queen?
Zarah, Queen Dowager: The first Queen consort of the United Kingdom of Windenburg! Your mother is the first Queen!
Queen Katherine: (reads and replies to text)
Anna: So I found a ring in Marsh's bag. I think he is going to propose to me. I don't know what to do! What should I say!? Yes!? No!? Gahh!? Me: Say yes!
Queen Katherine: Lara, now Anna! This is all such happy news!!
Zarah, Queen Dowager: "What is it, darling?"

Part of the problem lies with the fact that people have lived with the Star Trek "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one" theme from Star Trek II. The irony is that Star Trek III flipped that narrative on its head by having Kirk and the bridge crew throw away their careers to get to a reincarnated Spock and save him. The movie series stated that while the needs of the many may outweigh the needs of the few, that does not make it more important than the needs of the few. So they look at Max and her need for Chloe in her life to be putting the few over the many. Thus it's bad.
It also "helps" that Chloe is an in-your-face assertive woman with a dedicated hate club behind. One thing the haters loved to do was to throw the "selfish" excuse at Bae supporters because that gave them the moral victory. And it's long been an argument I've been ripping apart through a multitude of posts including pointing out that choosing Bay over Bae would be like a cop taking their gun and shooting the mayor in the head because a criminal was holding hostage a building full of people. Or even the government releasing an imprisoned criminal in exchange of a bus full of victims that were taken hostage by the criminal's gang.
It's often bandied about "we do not negotiate with terrorists" due to the belief that if you negotiate with them, then terrorists will start kidnapping people left and right to use as currency for the release of their people. And for all the times we hear about the police or military rescuing hostages... there are plenty of other times when the hostages die because negotiations were refused.
Here's another example: There is only a fraction of the population that is gay, but a much larger portion of the population finds same-sex marriage abhorrent. But laws protecting the few from the hatred of the many help provide legal protections... and that view resulted in the U.S. accepting same-sex marriage. Morally the needs of the few were more important than the needs of the many because the needs of the many was in fact an immoral position.
So then. It is not moral to choose the many over the few. If that is in fact the case (and it is), then what is moral about going back in time to "let events happen" in blind faith that somehow this will make it so the Storm doesn't happen? We have absolutely no proof at all that this would happen. Chloe died thanks to Jefferson and yet there was the Storm destroying Arcadia Bay. Why did she have to die at that exact point in time? How does that one action make it so a Storm doesn't happen?
Do note: There is nothing selfish about Max's act to save Chloe, any more than it was selfish for Max to try to (and hopefully) save Kate Marsh. Max knew Kate. She was casual friends and schoolmates with Kate. But when she rescued that blue-haired girl in the bathroom she had absolutely no idea who that girl was. The action was an act of kindness and decency done to save a stranger, and an action that she kept hidden until Chloe realized the truth.
So then, as @chloe-caulfield94 states, the only selfish act is for Max to go back in time and let Chloe die. Max has no idea that she's not just increasing the number of dead people in Arcadia Bay by one. She goes off of blind faith that God will accept the sacrifice of Isaac and thus bless Abraham. But you notice Abraham failed God and ends up forgotten soon after he tried to sacrifice his son. For Max to sacrifice Chloe is for Max to fail everything she went through, to turn her back to actually living life and to instead flee from the consequences of her actions (outside of guilt for however many years happen before DE).
The selfishness of saving Chloe Price
Almost every time I see the final choice of Life is Strange Season 1 discussed, at least one person wheels out the “selfishness” accusation – how supposedly it would be selfish for Max to save Chloe’s life over the lives of the other dwellers of Arcadia Bay. I almost exclusively see this accusation brought up in a “drive-by” manner, without further elaboration, as if the “selfishness” of Max saving the life of her best friend was self-evident. But let’s take a moment to actually analyse that bold claim.
In essence, a person is selfish if they prioritize their own needs and wants to the point that they neglect or even harm others. Being selfish is the opposite of being selfless, which is characterized by prioritizing the needs and wants of others, even to the detriment of your own.
I am genuinely baffled as to how saving another person’s life can ever be considered selfish. If Max had rewound time on Monday to save her own life and the only way for her to stop the Storm would be to undo the time she had saved her own life, thus killing herself, and she refused to do so, I guess you could try to argue she was being selfish. Of course, any person trying to accuse Max of being selfish in that hypothetical scenario would need to be certain they would in a similar predicament gladly throw their own life away, so as not to expect from her something they themselves wouldn’t be able to do. But how can Max saving Chloe’s life be selfish?
Making the argument that it was selfish of Max not to sacrifice Chloe reduces Chloe from a person to an object. For the purposes of that argument she is not treated as an independent actor, but as someone, or something, that only matters because of Max’s interest in her – as a friend or as a romantic partner. She is treated as Max’s possession, that Max should part with. But Chloe is her own person, which is why I think it is ridiculous to claim that Max saving her would be selfish – because she is not Max’s property.
To call an action selfish necessarily carries with itself a negative moral judgement. There’s no context in which that term can be used in a positive manner. When you pass a negative moral judgement, you are always invoking some standard that the action in question breached or failed to conform to. So what standard did Max break by refusing to sacrifice Chloe in order to stop the Storm? Why exactly that was a selfish act on her part?
Is it because she cares about Chloe more than she cares about the rest of the town? She does, and it’s not debatable.
Max: "I always wanted my life to be special. An adventure. But not without you".
Max: "You are my number one priority now. You are all that matters to me!"
Max: "I'll miss Chloe more than the rest of Arcadia Bay combined. It's not even close".
The first two lines are from Season 1, the third line is from Farewell. Max always says those lines, no matter what the player chooses throughout the game. Keep in mind, on the 11th of October 2013 Max had been in Arcadia Bay for less than two months. It was early October, she had moved back into town to attend Blackwell Academy and the school year had started in September. She had no family or long-term friends there other than Chloe. All her classmates she’d known for six weeks. Chloe and Joyce were the only two persons in town Max had known for longer than that. Max’s parents and long-term friends Kristen and Fernando remained in Seattle.
So Max refusing to sacrifice Chloe’s life in order to stop the Storm is selfish, because she cares more about her than she does about the people she would save by stopping the Storm. And Max killing Chloe by pushing her back in front of the barrel of Nathan’s gun is selfless, because by doing so she sacrifices someone she cares about more to save the lives of those she cares about less.
Don’t you see how insane that line of reasoning is? Under this standard, the morally positive thing is to prioritize the needs, safety and well-being of people you care less about over the needs of people you care more about. Under this standard, you are selfish if you protect people you love over the people you don’t love. And you are selfless if you protect the people you don’t love over the people you do love. So there’s an inverse relationship between how much you are emotionally attached to a person and how much you should protect and care about them.
I apologize for saying something that might sound like a truism, but unfortunately it seems that for some it isn’t one. First and foremost you owe your care, protection and devotion to the people you are emotionally attached to. That doesn’t make you selfish or evil. It makes you human. Imagine there’s a fire. Inside a burning building there’s your friend and another person, a stranger. You only have the time to carry out one of them to safety. Would you say that choosing to save your friend instead of the stranger from the fire was selfish? Of course not. In a situation where you can’t help everyone, where you have to choose between the needs of friends and the needs of strangers, you prioritize the needs of friends. That’s the essence of being someone’s friend.
If Max was selfish for refusing to sacrifice someone she deeply cared about to save others that she didn’t care as deeply about, let’s entertain a different hypothetical scenario. In this scenario, instead of Max having a life-long friendship with Chloe and only very brief, six-week relationship with the other dwellers of Arcadia Bay, it’s Max living in Arcadia Bay since she was born, uninterrupted. Kate, Warren, Alyssa – they all have been Max’s friends for years. It’s Chloe who moved into town recently. Max has only known her for six weeks. In this different world, Max is still faced with the same choice. Only this time the person she has the option of sacrificing is not her life-long best friend, but a recent acquaintance. And the town she has the option of saving is full of her long-term friends, instead of people she only recently met for the first time.
In this different world, would Max still be selfish for refusing to sacrifice Chloe? I mean, she would sacrifice people she cares more about to save a person she cares less about. Isn’t this what is expected from her by those claiming she would be selfish by saving Chloe? And would sacrificing Chloe become the new “selfish” option? Because in this different world Max would do it to save people she cared more about? Isn’t that what makes an action selfish?
And if you are of the opinion that Max (contrary to all her dialogues, monologues and diary entries) actually cares more about Warren or Kate than she does about Chloe, isn't sacrificing Chloe a selfish thing to do then?
A question for those who think it would be selfish for Max to save Chloe. Imagine it’s not them, but you and your own best friend in the same situation. Would you sacrifice the life of your own best friend to stop a tornado threatening a town? If you wouldn’t, why do you hold Max to a standard you yourself wouldn’t be able to meet? And if you would, do you realize how unhinged that sounds? Choosing to let your own best friend die “for the greater good”? That’s something a villain would do.
I’d argue that the really selfish thing for Max to do would be to sacrifice Chloe. Notice one very interesting thing. When the Storm comes, at the beach Chloe openly muses the possibility of it being Rachel’s revenge upon the town.
Chloe: "Look at that monster! Who knows, this could be Rachel’s revenge".
After dragging unconscious Max to the lighthouse, some fifteen minutes later, Chloe says that everything, including the Storm, had to happen for a reason and it couldn't have been any other way.
Chloe: "Fuck all of that, okay? You were given a power. You didn’t ask for it. And you saved me. Which had to happen, all of this did. Except for what happened to Rachel. But without your power we wouldn’t have found her. Okay, so you’re not the goddamn time master, but you’re Maxine Caulfield, and you’re amazing".
Replay that section of the game and notice how defiant of a look she has on her face. And then, after a few brief seconds, her defiant look gives way to a look of profound sadness and she does a complete 180, offering her sacrifice.
Chloe: "Max, this is the only way. You … You could use that photo to change everything right back to when you took that picture. All that would take is for me to … To …"
In the span of seconds she went from defiance and musing that perhaps the Storm had to happen to coming up with a way to stop the Storm at the cost of her own life. When Max pushes back against the idea, Chloe keeps arguing in favour of her own death, absolving Max from blame by saying she is simply meant to be murdered.
Max: "Fuck that! No, no way! I won’t trade you!"
Chloe: "You’re not trading me. Maybe you’ve just been delaying my real destiny. I think I should accept my fate".
Why does Chloe make this massive heel turn in such a short span of time, mere seconds? Because after saying her piece about the Storm being inevitable, Chloe saw how devastated with guilt Max was. Chloe’s offer to be sacrificed is in large part motivated by the desire to save Max from her guilt. Seeing how wracked with guilt Max was, Chloe decided to give Max a way out. Chloe didn’t want to live if the cost of her survival would be her best friend having to live with guilt.
Chloe: "Nobody, especially you should have to go through that. I don’t blame you for wanting me out of your life".
The selfish thing would be to accept Chloe’s sacrifice. If Max sacrifices Chloe, that means she values her guilty conscience more than Chloe’s life. That she doesn't want to live with guilt more than she wants to live with Chloe.
If you think that I’m exaggerating Chloe’s devotion to Max, then remember that Chloe’s last words are always that she loves Max. If you overdose her in Episode 4 or if you sacrifice her in Episode 5, just before she dies, she always says she loves Max. Regardless of player’s choices throughout the game. If your last words, no matter the timeline, are always to profess love for someone, I think it’s fair to say you genuinely and deeply care about that person.
Alt Chloe: "Don’t forget about me".
Chloe: "Don’t you forget about me!"
Alt Chloe: "I love you, Max".
Chloe: "I’ll always love you!"

Kate Marsh x Fem!Reader
Summary: “Kate Marsh x female reader. Kate asks r to have dinner with her parents. They've been dating for a while, but long enough for reader to know that Kate's mother is heavily religious so she'd obviously be homophobic. Dinner is very tense but Kate's dad likes reader and the mom eventually reluctantly accepts r”
Warnings: Homophobia, all I can think of atm
"Kate, I don't think that's a very good idea," I admit hesitantly, my nerves through the roof with just the mere idea in mind.
"But Lynn loved you when we called, so maybe it's time you met the whole family!" She smiles at me, her eyes twinkling.
I'm not sure if I should be more terrified or excited at the prospect of meeting her family for the first time. I've learned that her family is lovely, even though their conservative views may be a big part of their life. I don't think Kate has ever told me a negative thing about them.
I'm sure Kate dropped hints about the two of us dating to her parents, though the question of whether they know or not is still hung above our heads. I mean, I owe it to Kate, she's met most of my family, even extended family, I guess it's time to return the favour.
"Ok, I'll go," I finally give in, and hell it was worth it, the grin on her face worth more than the concept of money.
"Great! Thank you so much, Y/n!" She smiles from ear to ear trapping me in a massive bear-hug, glueing my arms to my side.
"No problem, Kate. I'm just glad we can do this together." I managed to strain out even with the lack of air the dirty-blonde is allowing me, relieved that this hurdle was set to be overcome.
Kate and I, we've been dating for 5 months and, to put it vaguely, it has been magnificent. We have a lot in common and despite what others may think, she's so much fun. Every date has been a great one--definitely better than some of my previous partners-- even if it's simply just trying a new tea or buying little bunny clothes for Alice. The both of us really do like each other, I sure know I do, but of course, this had to happen at some point.
Regardless, I know that meeting her family is going to be an interesting experience.
I lie on my side on her bed while she sits with her back facing me only her head turned to look me in the eyes, "So, what do I wear?"
"Clothes would be a good start." She giggles at her own words, "I'm sure they won't mind what you wear unless it's jewellery." The girl quickly adds.
"Why jewellery?" I query.
"Oh Y/n, you wouldn't understand. My mother is quite the critique on jewellery, one too many pearls, diamonds, chains on the piece will make her believe you're a satanist."
"Wow, not dramatic at all." I joke with a giggle in contrast to her somewhat concerning words.
"No, not at all. She's been there and I'm sure she'll do it again." She sighs, slightly turning to the side to take hold of my hand. "But don't worry, I can assure you that your little golden bracelet will not lead her to believe you are a satanist," She pauses, ", more of a criminal." The girl chuckles with a wink, only for the seriousness to take over once more. "But seriously, wear what you want. Though, expect to be judged."
I nod in agreement, leaning back into Kate's bed. It feels so good to finally be able to talk about this. We've been so secretive, scared of what our families would think or say. But now that we're both ready, we can finally begin to heal the wounds we've inflicted on ourselves.
The day soon arrives, and not to exaggerate, but I'm absolutely terrified. Terrified to the point the bottle of wine held in my hands as I stand outside the Marsh family's house is quite literally shaking.
My grip tightens around the neck of the bottle, I take a deep breath, trying to calm my racing heart before I knock on the door. Kate's hand softly placed on my back. After what feels like an eternity, the door opens and I'm met with Kate's mother, her father following shortly behind. The resemblance to Kate is uncanny, but I refuse to let that bother me.
"Hey, I'm Y/n. Nice to meet you Mrs Marsh, Mr Marsh." I smile, extending my hand toward both parents.
The father smiles, accepting my hand and shaking it, he must be happy to see Kate it's been quite a while since Christmas break."Oh, please, none of that Y/n. Call me Richard, and this is-"
"I'll stick with Mrs Marsh, thank you."
I'm caught off guard by the sudden tense feeling hung in the air, but I shrug it off, remembering the bottle of wine still within the grip of my hands. I look down at it, then back up to Mrs Marsh, who didn't seem too impressed.
"Oh, here," I hand her the bottle, ", this is for you." I awkwardly smile, still standing out the front of their house. It's like I need to complete some sort of test before entering the holy grounds.
The woman scoffs through her nose, reading the label, "Might I ask, how did you get this? Kate told me you were in her classes, meaning you're 18 if I'm correct." She interrogates, scaring me to the core, I'm sure Kate and her father could hear the massive gulp I'd performed after her words.
"Uh, of course, I am 18, my father bought it for me." I stutter, "Of course, not for me, bought it for me to give you, I gave him the mon-"
"I think it's best we head inside, I think I'm working up a cold." Kate smiles, dragging Mrs Marsh's burning gaze from me and around into the house. The girl turns her head to me mouthing a quick 'I'm sorry', before we enter the house. The six of us sit around the table, each parent sat adjacent to the other on either head of the table, Kate's sisters sat together while Kate and I sit opposite them.
Mrs Marsh speaks up, placing her glass of red wine down, "So, Y/n, Kate tells me you two became friends in Blackwell, just how so did that happen?"
I can't really tell whether she thinks it shouldn't have happened or whether she wished it hadn't happened. Both options don't sound too appealing. And, plus, friends? I thought Kate told her parents about us. Maybe her mother likes to know the beginnings of stories rather than jumping straight to the main plot. I sure hope so.
Richard clears his throat, "Oh honey, I'm sure Kate told you. Speaking of Kate telling us things, she doesn't stop talking about you on the phone, I'm sure her sisters know more about you than you do." He chuckles, gaining a scoff off of his wife.
"Don't be ridiculous, Richard. Y/n barely knows our Kate, I can guarantee in a year's time, they won't remember each other." She rolls her eyes, clearly not happy about the topic.
"Elizabeth! Please, we have guests." He warns Mrs Marsh.
"Guest." She corrects him out of spite.
"Yes, guest. And I don't want to hear any of your-"
"Y/n, what's your story?" Mrs Marsh interrupts, leaning forward and resting her elbows on the table, a faux sweet smile planted on her face as she blatantly ignores her husband.
I take a moment to calm myself down, reaching for Kate's hand under the table to which she accepts. I can feel Mrs Marsh's eyes on me, judging me, but I refuse to back down. I open my mouth to speak but fail to do so for a few seconds.
"Well, uh, I'm from Seattle, I'm majoring in English Literature-" I attempt to explain but am cut off.
"Sorry, let me put this in more accurate words, what do you want with Kate? You don't exactly seem to be the best of examples." She bites.
"Mom!"
"Honey, this is a conversation between me and your friend here." She snaps, fists balling around her knife and fork.
"Elizabeth, for Christ's sake, leave the poor girl alone." Kate's father finally speaks up, his voice a lot louder and a lot less calm than before.
I'm not exactly sure what I've done, said, or even looked at for that matter. Maybe Kate told them something, but what would there be to tell? I excuse myself from the table, stating I was refilling my half-empty glass of water. I get up out of my seat and wander off, finding my way to the kitchen, and to my surprise, Kate had followed me in. I take a sip from the glass with a chuckle, "So," I place the glass down, a cross my arms, ", was it the necklace?"
I can tell Kate doesn't want to laugh, but it doesn't stop the cute little grin tugging at the corners of her mouth. She steps forward to fiddle with the small necklace resting on my chest, a sorry expression on her face.
"I'm sorry." She breathes.
"Don't be, I'm sure she's just a bit curious as to who her daughter is keeping company with."
"Y/n, that's no excuse for the wake she was speaking to you." Her one hand cups my cheek as I try to avoid any eye contact. We both hear footsteps from down the hall, Kate recognises whose they are, leaning forward and plating a peck on my cheek. "I didn't tell her about us, only father. I think the time has come."
She leaves me confused, what 'time' has come? I thought her family knew about us, no wonder her mom's been a total bitch to me. Kate meets her mother at the door-framed entrance into the kitchen, Mrs Marsh not sparing me of the searing glare she'd been burning into me all evening before they both wander off.
I sigh, turning around and reaching for my glass, I turn back around and I'm met with Kate's youngest sister.
"Oh, Lynn! You scared me a bit there." I gasp, giggling shortly after.
"Sorry, Y/n, I didn't mean to startle you." She giggles too, cheeks turning a light pink.
"It's okay, I was just surprised is all." I smile.
"I think my mom's scarier." Lynn returns, her smile deflating.
"I hate to say it, but I agree." I laugh, patting Lynn's back before walking back into the living room.
I notice Kate's other sister, Grace, still sitting at the abandoned table, Mr Marsh must've left once we'd all abruptly cleared. Food still on our plates, cutlery misplaced, napkins chucked onto the table.
"Hey." I smile, walking up to her.
"Hi." She responds quietly, looking down at her lap.
"Are you alright?" I frown, touching her arm lightly.
"I'm fine, I just..." She trails off, shaking her head.
"It's okay, I don't want you to be uncomfortable."
"I'm not, it's just..." She sighs, looking up at me, "I don't understand why mother is like this. Can't she see Kate is happy? She's always taught us to love everybody and not to hate, but hate is all she seems to do. Y/n, I do hope mother finally sees the wrongs of her beliefs, for your's and Kate's sake."
I'm taken aback by her words, I've never heard her talk like this before. It's as if the weight of the world has been placed on her shoulders, and she doesn't know how to carry it.
"You're awfully nature for your age." I nudge her shoulder gently, but she obviously wasn't in a very good mood, giving me no choice but to return to our sombre-toned conversation. "It's okay, Grace, Kate and I won't let a few words break us apart."
Our speaking suddenly halts when a shout echoes throughout the Marsh house. Mr Marsh steps through the front door, his eyes scanning the house, he must've heard the shout too. We continue to hear more shouting, not back and forth, only one-sidedly. Whenever there's a louder voice, a softer and soothing one follows in return. Giving us all the hint Mrs Marsh isn't too happy with the news Kate has given.
"Please! Mom, listen!" Kate calls, following her mother who had just stormed past all of us in the dining room and into the living room.
"Enough, Kate." Words seethe through her clenched teeth, "I don't want to hear it." I notice Kate's eye's red and teary, the sight makes me merely want to crumble. "And you," She snaps her head to me, ", stay away from Kate."
Before I have a chance to respond, Mr Marsh's voice has already drowned out his wife's anger-fuelled muttering. Taking her out of the room, the living room now brought to silence.
"What happened?" I ask, but Kate's eyes remain trained on her youngest sister, studying her as if she's a specimen he's never seen before.
"I-I told her-" Kate starts to sob, "I told her about us. How I felt about you."
"Take your time." I remind her, knowing the smallest dose of emotion could send Kate into some sort of frenzy.
"And she just- she- she said I was impure, disgusting, a sinner." Kate gasps, her arms clinging onto mine. "And then she told me to leave... And never come back."
I can feel the tears streaming down my face, I'm not sure what to do. We're both in shock, all we can do is stand here and hold onto each other.
About 30 minutes pass by, though they feel like hours, Kate and I's plans to stay the night had changed and we were just beginning to leave until we're stopped at the door. Mr Marsh and his daughters had bid their goodbyes, so it could only be one person. "Kate."
We turn around to face Mrs Marsh, eyes closed, letting out a deep sigh. She fiddles with the sleeves on her blouse before speaking again.
"Though it isn't normal, it isn't... bad." She grumbles, "I don't understand how you could possibly turn that way, but it is out of my control. I'm sorry. To the both of you."
"It's okay." Kate tells her, though I can see the pain and heartache etched all over her features. And with that, Mrs Marsh closes the door.
It's going to be a while until the next family reunion.

People tend to view Chloe as a "bad person" and "toxic friend" and "irredeemable" for one of two reasons. First? It is much easier to justify murdering someone (and Sacrifice Chloe is murder) if the person murdered was "a bad person who always would be bad."
The second is of course misogyny. I have in the past run across people who stated proudly "I hated Chloe so I did everything I could to make her suffer before I killed her" and even "Max was so bland and uninteresting, I hate her so much so I'm making Max suffer by killing Chloe."
Honestly, very few people who care about Chloe talk about the need to sacrifice her or that it is justified or needed. Some folks talk about the "Greater Good" but they don't really stick around to defend their point, possibly seeing that their actions are in fact wrong.
Let's put it another way. Let's ignore Max, let's ignore Chloe. You have your boyfriend or girlfriend or brother or sister or someone else who you are really close to. You love them. It need not be romantic. Love is love, the love toward family or friends is as powerful as that of a boyfriend or girlfriend or spouse. Would you sacrifice your loved one to save a bunch of people who don't care for your loved one? Not Max Caulfield. You yourself.
More, would you sacrifice that person on a "maybe" - that maybe killing them will stop something horrible from happening? You have no proof. You just have some person insisting that your loved one has to die to save everyone else. Would you do it?
When you look at it from that perspective... you don't sacrifice your loved one. You convince yourself that it wouldn't change anything. You move on and look ahead. It was always going to happen. How is time traveling into the past and letting your loved one die going to change a huge-ass tornado from destroying your town? That's just idiocy. That's saying "God insists I need to sacrifice my son" (Abraham, I am looking at you and calling you out).
There is one last thing about Chloe that so many "Chloe is horrible" people forget. This is a girl who for nearly five years has been being abused emotionally and physically by her stepfather, had law enforcement and her school turn their backs on her, had her mother turn a blind eye and protect Chloe's abuser, and most importantly of all had been dosed with a date-rape drug and doesn't know if she was raped or not. Chloe is a survivor of sexual assault. So is Kate Marsh. Kate snaps at people and is angry... and ends up on the top of a building intending on jumping to her death. Chloe ends up on the side of a cliff offering her best friend an out to maybe save everyone else but at the cost of her own life.
Chloe is a victim. It's easy to look at her actions and say "she's horrible" (and the irony is so many people are willing to defend the rich handsome white guy who assaulted Chloe and Kate and Rachel) and ignore what was done to her, done to all of the victims in this story. They insist "there was no rape" as if that is a viable shield, that the sexual assault is okay because there was no penetration that we know of. They blame the victims rather than the criminals. After all, the victims are just young women.
It's so mental to me how people can even think that Chloe is horrible and irredeemable. Like she is a teen girl that has gone through a lot of trauma, of course she's gonna do or say things that aren't perfect and she's going to be messy. She definitely needs therapy, but she's not a bad person. In fact, she has so much love in her heart that she wants to give. Life has just beaten her up over and over, and she has to protect herself by being so prickly.
Both her and Max should be in therapy once they get to Seattle. Hell, maybe even couples therapy. As much as I love Pricefield, they are pretty codependent and have things they need to work out.
Yeah, I can understand not liking Chloe, but the extreme word use involving her is a lot. Much worse characters have gotten redemption arcs in their canon media, so it's hard for me to wrap my head around someone seeing a troubled teen girl and going "She can not learn or grown."
I think Chloe is a good case study on "troubled people aren't synonymous with bad people." Like you said, she needs therapy, and she needs to learn to communicate in a better way, but she's never had the safe space to do that. Her home isn't safe. She got kicked out of school. Her relationship with Rachel seemed a unstable. Max was MIA. Like...she's never been given a good space to learn and grow, and when she's given that environment when Max comes back, she flourishes, despite their...actually really serious codependency going on.
I also think hating Chloe kind of misses the point of the entire game. Being faced with the choice to sacrifice her is supposed to be so hard partially because we've spent all week seeing how much Chloe can grow. She's just started to heal, and now we're realizing that we might have to rewind it all back. It's a tragedy to sacrifice Chloe, and if the point of the game was "Chloe is a bad friend and Max needs to let her go," then the sacrifice Chloe ending would play out in much less devastating way.
So yeah I basically wrote three paragraphs to say "I agree with you deeply." Chloe isn't irredeemable but she is flawed and does need therapy. So do Max and Chloe really because they're codependency is on a whole different level, but still love them, though.
